"Freedom or Death," a slogan many mistake as originating with Lester Bangs, was actually not a Bangs quotation at all, but a philosophy he adopted for both his lifestyle and his writing. After being fired from Rolling Stone for "disrespecting" musicians and refusing to be a payola propagandist, Lester moved up and out, bopping on over to CREEM, where he tested and teased the limits of honest and free expression.

A personal creed he professed on poly-cotton blend, for Lester, "Freedom or Death" was at the core of good rock 'n' roll, and the tee served as a fittingly in-your-face reminder.
