Looming large in the Lester Bangs mythology, the origins of the "Detroit sucks!" battle-cry are speculated by some to be Chicago Blackhawks hockey fans, and by others to be a 1960s campaign begun in Detroit, itself.
Bangs moved to Detroit in 1971 to work at CREEM, and hunkered down for five years, growing to detest Detroit as much as he begrudgingly loved it, calling it both "rock's only hope," and "home of the world's ugliest people."
From the iconic photo of Lester with is arms over his head like a heavyweight champ, to Philip Seymour Hoffman playing Bangs in Almost Famous, the tee has become synonymous with Bangs and his love-hate relationship with the city where he did some of his most brilliant, brash, controversial, beloved writing.
The Lester Bangs Capsule is part of the CREEM Archive Collection, our PREMIUM merch line featuring classic logos, artwork, and other deep cuts ripped straight from the pages of America’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Magazine. Printed on soft, vintage-style, tees these elevated items will turn yer wardrobe up to 11.
