When it comes to Mike Patton, it’s best to expect the unexpected. The longtime Faith No More/Mr. Bungle/Fantômas vocalist is a man of 1,000 faces and as many projects, mixing it up with mathcore, turntablists, avant-rap, film soundtracks, free jazz, and all manner of experimentalism in his quest to follow his muse. But positively no one could have guessed when the announcement came through that Mike Patton would be collaborating with four-time Grammy winners the Avett Brothers as AVTT/PTTN. Or maybe we all should have—in Patton’s world of improvisation and pushing boundaries, it actually makes perfect sense.
