A desert session on being adored

March 1, 2026
Joel Gion

Very hot and extremely dusty is the landscape’s resting-face state here at Pioneertown, located in the Joshua Tree desert of Southern California. The Brian Jonestown Massacre have just moseyed on inta’ town this morning to play this tiny ex-Hollywood cowboy flick factory’s center of anti-gravitas, Pappy & Harriet’s. Back in the 1940s Pioneertown was a movie-set town for many a Gene Autry film and a lot of other yippee-ki-yayness, a permanent backdrop town eventually turned ghost town until becoming, more recently, the zombie resurrection tourist trinket town that it is today. “Pappy’s" is a honky-tonk biker-infused paradise of hard booze, loud music, and high-level backyard-style culinary dee-lights.
