There is a certain virgin innocence in some people that cannot be denied the freedom to show itself otherwise; as soon as restrictions are used, the innocence is tainted and the virginity becomes slutlike and worthless. Melanie Safka has that innocence. Her sons have the stardust quality that invades all boundaries of society but which many people ignore lest they should appear over-sentimental. Upon hearing, in a crowd, one of her songs, people lower their heads, partly to listen and partly because of the self-realization which her sons inject into the atmosphere.

If, in fact, she never accomplishes anything else, Melanie can be proud that she has made many people aware of themselves, herself, and the rest of the world.
