LOS ANGELES — The Grass Roots, a group with a consistent string of hits over the past four years, have turned down an invitation to perform at the White House on July 12th. The group said it would have been hypocritical of them to accept the offer as they are in total opposition to President Nixon’s regime and its involvement in Southeast Asia.
Warren Entner, the Grass Roots’ guitarist, said it would have meant compromise in all four members’ values to do the performance. Aside from Entner, the group consists of Rick Coonce on drums, Rob Grill on bass and lead vocals, and Dennis Provisor on drums.
The July 12th performance at the National Palace would have been in front of an audience including such notables as Prince Charles, Princess Margaret and Washington’s favorite virgins, Tricia, Julia and David. This is reportedly the first snub at a President since way back in the LBJ regime.
