THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (Bryanston):: What could have been a chilling vision of a true story (like Badlands) or a tale manipulated by fact just for effect (like Night of the Living Dead) is instead a true story with no visions or effects. Three brothers who savagely murder five hippies slaughterhouse fashion only find life interesting when they set Grandpa up to kill their last victim. And they literally set him up — he’s a cake make-up mummy in a. wheelchair who comes to life by sucking the blood of the young girl through her finger, but when it’s time to do her in he keeps dropping the sledgehammer on the floor until the girl escapes. Cheaply produced (terrible color), with no members of the cast likely to appear on future covers of Time. But perhaps the proceeds from Chainsaw will help offset the price of restoring the surviving girl’s sanity. If she gets a cut, there’s good in everything.
