Letter From Britain

Casing The Promised Land

So you're scared and you're thinking that maybe we aren't that young anymore.

March 1, 1976
Simon Frith

So you're scared and you're thinking

That maybe we aren't that young anymore.

Show a little faith, there's magic in the night.

You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright

Oh and that's alright with me! If Bruce Springsteen had been British he would either have been Leo Sayer or, later, if he hadn't made it the first time round, Alex Harvey. Now Leo Sayer's a pathetic little fellow who looks like he's about to lie down and let you tickle him, and Alex Harvey's a cynical old Scot with one of the most offensively calculated stage shows you could hope to see. Bruce Springsteen, when he was finally ready for Lohdon, was wonderful butlie wasn't quite what I'd expected and he had an art that Britain could not have nurtured.
