Buns Across The Ocean: Patti Smith, who’s always had a volatile relationship with the British press (when a Melody Maker reporter came a’callin’, she was waiting for him with his pan notice of Horses pinned on her hotel room wall), met the British press in October at a press conference. Patti started to praise the technical genius of British sound men, only to be intermpted by a reporter who protested that the best rock ‘n’ roll had been recorded on . crude equipment. Patti explained that when playing on a large hall, sometimes her major concern was just being heard. “Roch ‘n’ roli is a technological art,” she argued, pointing out that just like a kid learning to take apart his car, she wanted to know about her sound set-up. To be Interrupted by a reporter who pointed out that not manykids in England had cars. Then the rolls started flying; Patti tossed a few, exclaiming: “You’re boring!” as they clattered across the room. Later, though, a diplomatic patti said that she thought the press conference had been “cool”.
