Cassettes are the handiest and cheapest way to listen to recorded music and watch recorded TV. Audio cassettes and audio cassette players are particularly inexpensive and functional. So while the people who make music for profit may bemoan the fact that “those damn kids aren’t buying records, they’re taping the songs they like on their own cassettes,” the people who make music for pleasure have discovered that the audio cassette is the best current technology for playing a song.
There are a wide variety of cassette machines offered for sale, from compact Walkmans to AM/FM Stereo Cassette portables to component cassette decks. As with other technological hardware, the more expensive the cassette machine, the more likely it is to provide high-tech sound.
One particular cassette deck that deserves serious consideration is the Onkyo TA-W88. The suggested list price is $379.95, which is a substantial investment when good quality cassette machines are available for one-third that price, but the TA-W88 has some features which make it quite extraordinary.
