45 REVELATIONS

September (drawing to a close as I write this) was one of those bumper crop months. The best way I’ve found to deal with a single surplus (other than exporting them to Russia) is to stack them in alphabetical order, trim the introductory remarks to an austere minimum, and plow through the stack to make sure the review candidates retain the standout qualities that caught my attention in the first place.

Following are the survivors. (Two stars before a record, in an ancient code translated from the New York Rocker scrolls, means it’s a special favorite.)

MARC ALMOND-“You Have”: One of the most annoying artists on earth at times, Almond can also be quite winsome as on this lilting, upbeat number, when he leans toward the sentimental instead of the sleazy.

AZTEC CAMERA—“Jump”: A startling acoustic version of the Van Halpn classic, included more for conception than execution.
