Little Richard Penniman is one of rock’s greatest legends. If you’re interested in his past, you’d be well advised to read his new biography, The Life And Times Of Little Richard: The Quasar Of Rock by Charles White. It’s a virtual rock ’n’ roll bible (see accompanying review).

THE QUASAR SPEAKS!
by Bill Holdship
Little Richard Penniman is one of rock’s greatest legends. If you’re interested in his past, you’d be well advised to read his new biography, The Life And Times Of Little Richard: The Quasar Of Rock by Charles White. It’s a virtual rock ’n’ roll bible (see accompanying review). We’re more interested in his present here—although during the course of an hour interview, Richard affectionately discusses some of rock’s greatest giants, from Alan Freed (“If anyone reminded me of Moses or one of those guys, it was Alan”), Buddy Holly and Elvis (“He sang my song ‘Tutti Frutti’ on his first TV show, and he was just a-shakin’!”) to Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix (“He idolized me to death. He used to see my headbands and everything, and the next thing I knew, he had them on his head. He wanted to make his guitar sound like my voice when I’d go ‘Wooo!’ ”).
