HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

BEST OF ’87/’88: Fore!, the guys' mega-successful follow-up to 1984’s Sports, is still selling like hotcakes nearly a year after its release. PROFILE: Huey Lewis & The News quickly developed a reputation as one of San Francisco’s hottest bar bands when they formed in the late 70s, but their style of true American rock ’n’ roll didn't reach a mass audience until Chrysalis—an English record label—released their debut album in 1980.

REBELS WITH A CAUSE

BEST OF ’87/’88: Fore!, the guys' mega-successful follow-up to 1984’s Sports, is still selling like hotcakes nearly a year after its release. PROFILE: Huey Lewis & The News quickly developed a reputation as one of San Francisco’s hottest bar bands when they formed in the late 70s, but their style of true American rock ’n’ roll didn't reach a mass audience until Chrysalis—an English record label—released their debut album in 1980.

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: Scoring back-to-back Top 10 records with Sports and Fore!, both of which contained a slew of hit singles.

MOST DARING FEAT: Huey once told a Los Angoles audience that he hated their city, then narrowly saved his skin by launching into a raucous version of “I Love L.A.” ;

FIRST BAND: Before forming the News, Huey released two albums in 1977 with a band named Clover.

WHAT’S IN A NAME: Huey’s parents call him Hugh A. Cregg III.

QUOTE: “I think—I hope—there’s a certain honesty that comes from us being a ‘ real music band.” —Huey Lewis
