If Steve Keene had his way, everyone would own an original copy of Munch’s The Scream, Klimt’s The Kiss, Basquiat’s Dustheads, and whatever the hell else they wanted. That’s because Keene’s idea of art is very different from most. “To me, it’s like I’m making bagels or pizzas,” he remarks. “It’s a product. I’ll create a system where I’ll do 20 of the same thing at the same time, so it’s very fast. I think that painting copies is just me interpreting things and then kind of spitting it out. [I like to spend] as little time as possible.”
And with that we enter the world of the great Steve Keene, a 30-year resident of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, self-described New York eccentric, and one-man painting machine. Keene’s work is marked by copying everyday objects, a lot of them album covers or music-related items, and painting dozens upon dozens of each, by hand, and making them affordable to the common person on his website.
