CLIFF BURTON

Cliff Burton and his 1972 Volkswagen Station Wagon 411.

Well, lookee what we have here! It’s the man himself, Mr. Orion, Metallica’s god of the low-end riff—the one and only Cliff. Here he is with his turquoise metallic 1972 Volkswagen Station Wagon 411, which he affectionately called the Grasshopper. If cars could talk, and not in an irritating Pixar kind of way, then this piece of fine German engineering would have some goddamn stories. According to the photographer, this photo was taken in the parking lot of Big O Tires, located across from Ruthie’s Inn, the infamous “Bezerkeley” nightclub. Cliff “beat in the steering wheel so much that there was barely any of it left,” and toward the end “he had to steer with a pair of pliers.” Fuckin’ metal, bro. Sabrina Carpenter or Imagine Dragons or some pop-leaning riff coward (maybe not Charli XCX, she’s tight) wouldn’t dare do that in their Volvo or Prius or whatever.
