Dusty Fingers
DE LA COEUR
New Roses is a classic-in-waiting

This time, I’m going to go out on a limb and try something different. CREEM hired me to write this column where I recommend a lost classic that nobody knows about or records that I think deserve more attention. Basically, albums that have slipped through the cracks without getting their earned respect, and these old dusty crates and my fingers tell their dusty stories of woe.
There really isn’t any kind of music that I don’t listen to, but I don’t listen to a lot of current music because there’s SO MUCH old good music that I’ve yet to hear. But if it’s good, it’s good. A couple months ago, a friend sent me a new record they thought I would like—New Roses by a guy named Ben de la Cour—and it was (wow) really good! I was blown away. Imagine a dark, gothic Americana with a dash of something that sounded like...I don’t know, Coil? Leonard Cohen-like storytelling under an industrial cloud soundtracked with instrumentals of tomorrow.
