Greetings from Detroit
EVERYBODY NEEDS A YUGO SOMETIME
Zastava and the making of a modern band

What’s it take to rock nowadays? Shame, mostly.
It’s Friday, April 3, Opening Day in Detroit. The Tigers beat the Cardinals, breaking a four-game losing streak. I'm in Hamtramck, once again at Outer Limits to see local four-piece Zastava. There’s Mateja Matic on guitar and vocals, Arman Bonislawski on guitar, and Cam Frank and Ollie Elkus on bass and drums. What they sound like is a natural amalgamation of musical styles that seem au courant nowadays: less garage rock, more noise. If not outright gazing at shoes, then perhaps furtively peeking at them. They seem young to me, probably because I am old. Or maybe they seem unafraid of grabbing for all the opportunities that being in a band affords. They appear humble enough to not realize they have charisma and looks to spare—qualities those of us lacking in said attributes are keenly aware of when in the vicinity of those who possess them. Also, they can draw a hometown crowd, a rare feat for a Detroit band. Anyway, I asked them some questions...
I should have looked this up beforehand—what’s the band name mean?
