Detroit’s unsung psych-folk hero Ted Lucas finally gets his moment
June 1, 2026

The music biz never seemed to know what to do with Ted Lucas, which is how the singer-songwriter wound up getting pelted with beer bottles while opening for Black Sabbath in Toledo in 1974.
“It was, like, these 14-year-old white boys on speed," recalls Don Was, the now-legendary producer and Blue Note Records president who had then landed a gig playing bass in Lucas’ backing band, which also included a conga player—not exactly heavy metal fare. “And I remember we stopped when the drummer was bleeding so bad that he couldn’t see."
