THE PUNK ROCK SURVIVOR

With Social Distortion inching toward 50, Mike Ness isn’t going away quietly

June 1, 2026
Daniel Kohn

Social Distortion are one of the last bands one might expect to headline a cruise. The Orange County-based punks, led by Mike Ness, cut their teeth at house parties and on beer-battered floors of dingy California punk clubs like Costa Mesa’s Cuckoo’s Nest, Fender’s Ballroom in Long Beach, Placentia Boys’ Club, and Ichabod’s in Fullerton. Compared with those venues, on the surface, playing here was, well, smooth sailing.

When Ness & Co. took the stage in front of an enthusiastic group of gray-haired and baldheaded aging punks on a pool deck to play their first show of 2026 (and second consecutive year on the Underground Garage cruise), they did so with purpose. Despite battling the elements, the deck beneath them swaying from the wind gusts and uncompromising sea, Social Distortion grinded through a 70-minute set to kick off the long weekend’s festivities.
