DEAD MOON (EVERY) NIGHT

After the staggering loss of Fred Cole, Toody Cole returns

Joy Division’s Unknown Pleasures cover. The Misfits’ Crimson Ghost skull. The Ramones’ presidential seal. Just a few of the many bands whose logo shirts have become so ubiquitous that they’re now considered “T-shirt bands.” For a certain subset of garage rock fans, Portland, Ore., trio Dead Moon’s classic moon logo is equally ubiquitous. But Dead Moon were never just a T-shirt band—far from it. And a version of their logo was actually tattooed on frontman Fred Cole’s face.

Across 10 studio albums and half a dozen live LPs, Dead Moon built a following based on their riffy rock ’n’ roll songwriting, producing a bevy of fan favorites and becoming true underground legends in the process. Fans of the Nuggets compilation (which featured Cole’s early band Lollipop Shoppe), the Gories, Goner Records, and other garage rockers sunk their teeth in, and deeply. Along with crunchy production and infinitely catchy songs, the heart of the band was a marriage of like-minded musicians and reallife couple Fred and Toody Cole.
