INTO THE NOT REALLY WELL-KNOWN

Examining the long-lost Bad Religion prog LP

September 1, 2026
Jerry A. Lang

When was the first time I heard Bad Religion? I can’t remember what came out first—the Public Service 12-inch compilation or the weird cassette with Youth Brigade and a dozen other bands and a booklet. I also can’t remember if the songs on both releases were the demo versions of the songs that would appear on the first cassette that made the rounds or if they were lifted off the first 7-inch EP itself. Either way, that led me to the single, which I thought was great and just what we needed at that time: smart songs from smart young kids, not being told what to do by other kids who knew better than you, just kids singing about what was in their hearts.
