ROCK-A-RAMA
SWAMPWATER (RCA):: Didja ever wonder what the Byrds would sound like doing some of those good folk-rock tunes they never got around to recording? Well, here’s Swamp-water, former backup band for Linda Ronstadt and Arlo Guthrie, and not only do they do “One Note Man” (what ever happened to Paul Arnoldi, anyway?) and “Back On The Street Again,” but they do “Gentle Way of Lovin’ Me,” which they wrote.

If that makes you curious, check it out, but we don’t really need yet another hokey Hollywood hillbilly band, do we?
SOFT MACHINE 4 (COLUMBIA):: The Soft Machine are pioneers in novocaine-rock, combining some of the most interesting developments in contemporary classical-jazz fusion with kind of a rock context. Their last album, Third, was three out of four sides of superlative explorations of this music, but this one is rather a disappointment; probably because they don’t have the room to stretch out. Hard-core fans might find it interesting. Others are directed to Third.
